Sushi Sato sits among the trees of Dempsey Hill, away from the CBD, with free parking outside. Master chef Yuji Sato, from Obihiro in Hokkaido, trained at a Tsukiji sushi-ya and has more than 30 years of experience; head chef Yusuke Kawana, from Chiba, worked in Tokyo sushi restaurants and leads the counter with him. The centrepiece is a counter of 200-year-old hinoki, and the restaurant is listed in the Michelin Guide 2026.
Ingredients are shipped from Japan four times a week, with an emphasis on Hokkaido produce, and menus change each quarter. Yamagata rice is dressed with a blend of three red vinegars that suits oily fish. Only omakase is served: lunch costs S$188 (Utsukushi), S$250 (Tomi) or S$350, and dinner S$420 (Kokoro) or S$480 for the chef's special, before GST and service charge.
Suited to sushi diners who like a quieter setting outside the city centre. Book online through inline; cancelling within 48 hours costs S$150 at lunch or S$300 at dinner. Dress is smart, with no shorts or flip-flops. Children over ten are welcome. Closed on Mondays.
Menus, prices and seatings change and many counters book out, so please check with the restaurant before you go.
