Ippoh is a tempura counter on Aberdeen Street, a short walk uphill from Sheung Wan station. The family business started in Osaka and is now run by its fifth generation, with branches in Osaka, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong. The local restaurant has 12 seats, eight at the counter and four at tables, and is listed in the Michelin Guide.
The owner-chef follows traditional rules and batters and fries every piece himself. Seafood is flown in daily from Osaka and Toyosu market, and flavourless safflower oil keeps the taste of the ingredients clear; the dipping sauce follows a secret family recipe. Lunch menus run from HK$580 to HK$1,280 and dinner omakase from HK$1,580 to HK$1,880.
Omakase is the best way to eat here, and it suits anyone who wants classic Osaka-style tempura at the counter. Bookings are essential and can be made on TableCheck. Changes or cancellations within 48 hours are charged HK$400 per guest at lunch and HK$800 at dinner. Closed on Sundays.
Menus, prices and seatings change and many counters book out, so please check with the restaurant before you go.
